The Political Section

In the Political Section, we follow domestic and foreign affairs of India to keep the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Copenhagen updated about the political development in the country. Additionally, we report on the latest domestic and foreign political developments in the side-accredited countries of Sri Lanka, the Maldives, Nepal, and Bhutan.

Furthermore, we take part in the work of the European Union in India led by the EU Delegation in New Delhi. This collaboration includes the EU's relations to India, the human rights situation in the country, and climate and energy policy.

The Political Section supports bilateral cooperation between Denmark and India. In 2008, Denmark and India agreed to form a Joint Commission to take India-Denmark relations forward. The first meeting took place in 2010 between then Danish Foreign Minister, Ms. Lene Espersen, and Minister for External Affairs, Mr. S.M. Krishna.

On 12th May 2020, the third meeting in the Indo-Danish Joint Commission between then Danish Foreign Minister, Mr. Jeppe Kofod, and Minister of External Affairs, Dr. S. Jaishankar took place virtually. At the meeting, the two Ministers agreed to work towards establishing a Green Strategic Partnership between India and Denmark,
building on the existing cooperation in the Joint Commission within the areas of green transition and sustainability.

During a virtual summit on 28th September 2020, Prime Minister, Ms. Mette Frederiksen, and Indian Prime Minister, Mr. Narendra Modi, agreed to elevate the bilateral relationship to a Green Strategic Partnership. This partnership aims to expand and strengthen the Danish-Indian cooperation and take it to a new level. The agreement on the Green Strategic Partnership and the associated Joint Action Plan was reaffirmed during the Danish Prime Minister’s official visit to India on 9th-11th October 2021.

As part of the Green Strategic Partnership, Denmark and India have agreed to establish several strategic sector cooperations within the areas of energy, water, sustainable urban development, health, intellectual property rights (IPR), and maritime cooperation.

Culture and press relations also form part of the work of the Political Section. We actively work to promote Danish cultural products and support cultural exchange between Denmark and India. In addition, we collaborate with Indian journalists who are interested in bringing focus to Denmark and Danish culture.
